Start by Measuring Your Dog, Not Choosing by Breed

Breed recommendations can be useful as a rough guide, but dogs of the same breed can differ considerably in height, length, build and travelling position.

A compact 35 kg dog may need more width than a taller 35 kg dog. A long-backed dog may require considerably more floor length, while a dog that sits upright for most of the journey will need enough internal height to avoid crouching.

Before comparing trailers, record the following measurements:

• Body length: measure from the front of the chest to the base of the tail while your dog is standing.
• Sitting height: measure from the floor to the top of the head, depending on how your dog normally sits.
• Current weight
• Travelling weight: allow for bedding, a mat, water and anything else carried inside the trailer.

Your dog should be able to enter, turn around, sit and lie down naturally. At the same time, an unnecessarily oversized cabin can allow the dog to move around too much when the bicycle turns or brakes.

Bigger is not necessarily better, no need to buy the largest trailer available. Choose the smaller trailer that gives your dog enough usable space and remains suitable for your routes, storage and bicycle.

Croozer Enna: Suspension and a Low Entry

The Croozer Enna is designed for dogs weighing up to 35 kg.

Its internal floor measures 75 × 40 cm, with approximately 62 cm of height in the front section. The entry height is 18 cm, making it more accessible than many higher-bodied trailers.

The Enna’s most notable feature is Croozer AirPad suspension. This is paired with 16-inch off-road tyres to reduce the amount of vibration and impact transferred through the trailer on uneven roads and paths.

It also includes extensive mesh ventilation, a removable weather cover, a washable interior insert, parking brakes and a folding frame. The supplied bike kit includes the hitch arm, safety flag and one universal hitch.

The Enna is best suited to medium-to-large dogs that fit comfortably within its 75 cm internal length. It may not be the right option for a particularly long dog, even when the dog is safely below the stated weight limit. In fact we recommend the Enna Croozer for dogs between 15 - 25kg. 

Burley Bark Ranger Large: A Lighter Trailer and Stroller Combination

The Large version of the Burley Bark Ranger carries pets up to approximately 34 kg.

It provides a 92 cm-long floor, 42.5 cm of internal width and 61.5 cm of cabin height. The longer floor may suit dogs that need more room to lie out than the Croozer Enna provides.

The Bark Ranger is also a genuine two-in-one product. A one-wheel stroller kit and adjustable handlebar are included, allowing it to convert from bike trailer to dog stroller.

This can be especially useful when cycling forms only part of the journey. You might tow the trailer to a park, event or town centre, disconnect it and continue on foot without asking an older or less mobile dog to walk the full distance.

The trailer has a low centre of gravity, 20-inch wheels, mesh windows, a removable floor and a large rear opening. It can also be used as a temporary kennel-style space while your dog becomes familiar with the trailer.

The Burley is best suited to owners who value low weight, stroller conversion and practical everyday use over specialist rough-terrain suspension.

Best 40kg Dog Bike Trailer

Petrive ACTIVE ONE: A Wide Cabin with Useful Equipment Included

The Petrive ACTIVE ONE has a maximum load of 40 kg and one of the widest cabins in this part of the Hitch A Bike range.

Its internal dimensions are approximately 80 cm long, 65 cm wide and 60 cm high. That 65 cm floor width can make it particularly relevant for stocky, broad-chested dogs that may feel confined in a narrower 35 kg or 45 kg trailer.

The ACTIVE ONE runs on 20-inch pneumatic rear wheels. Air-filled tyres help absorb smaller road imperfections. The Petrive dog bike trailer is one of the more affordable options. 

The standard equipment is generous. It includes a mattress, integrated rain protection, safety flag, reflectors, an internal leash, storage pockets and a bike mount.

The wheels detach without tools, while the drawbar folds and stores beneath the chassis. Once the wheels and drawbar are removed, the body can also be used as a static crate or familiar resting space.

At 13 kg, it is lighter models. However, its wide body means it is not a compact option. Check the width of your garden gate, storage area, car boot and regular cycle routes before ordering.

Best Dog Bike Trailers for Dogs Up to 45kg

Several trailers in our range carry dogs up to 45 kg, but they are not interchangeable.

The Croozer Mikke, Croozer Tammo, Hamax Pluto Large and Burley Bark Ranger XL all serve slightly different furry needs and riders preferences. Cabin shape, suspension and stroller functionality should guide the final decision.

Croozer Mikke: A Balanced Large-Dog Trailer

The Croozer Mikke carries dogs up to 45 kg and offers an internal floor measuring 90 × 54 cm.

It provides approximately 77 cm of headroom in the front area, creating a useful balance between floor length, width and height for many large dogs.

Like the Enna, the Mikke uses Croozer AirPad suspension. Its larger 20-inch off-road tyres make it better suited to longer journeys and mixed surfaces.

Ventilated mesh panels run around the cabin, while a removable front cover provides protection from rain and road spray. The interior insert can be removed and washed, and the frame folds to approximately 26 cm high once collapsed.

For many large dogs, the Mikke will be the most balanced option in the Croozer range. It has more usable room than the Enna without moving up to the greater overall size of the Tammo.

Croozer Tammo: More Height and Length, Not More Weight Capacity

The Croozer Tammo has the same 45 kg maximum load as the Mikke, but its cabin is substantially taller and longer.

The internal floor measures 100 × 54 cm, while the front section offers approximately 87 cm of internal height.

This is an important distinction. The Tammo is not intended for a heavier dog than the Mikke. It is intended for a dog that needs more physical space within the same load limit.

Tall dogs, long-backed breeds and dogs that prefer sitting upright are more likely to benefit from the Tammo’s additional cabin height and floor length.

It retains the AirPad suspension, off-road tyres, washable interior, mesh ventilation and weather protection found across the Croozer dog range.

The trade-off is overall size. The Tammo is approximately 115 cm long, 86 cm wide and 103 cm high when open. 

Hamax Pluto Large: Adjustable Suspension and Included Stroller Mode

The Hamax Pluto Large carries dogs up to 40 kg and provides an internal space measuring approximately 78 × 46 × 67 cm.

Its strongest feature is versatility. The stroller wheel and height-adjustable handlebar are included, allowing the Pluto to convert into a dog pram without purchasing a separate conversion kit.

The suspension can be adjusted through three positions to suit the load and riding conditions. This can be valuable for a heavier dog because the trailer can be set up according to your dogs weight and expected surface.

A low entry, internal safety hooks, parking brake and removable floor and lower wall panels add to its suitability for puppies, older dogs and pets with reduced mobility.

The Pluto Large is not as long or wide internally as the Croozer Mikke, Croozer Tammo or Burley Bark Ranger XL. A dog can therefore be below the 40 kg weight limit but still need a larger cabin.

The Pluto is best suited to an owner who values adjustable suspension and stroller functionality.

Burley Bark Ranger XL: A Wide, Lightweight Trailer and Stroller

The XL version of the Burley Bark Ranger carries dogs up to 45 kg.

Its cabin measures approximately 92 cm long, 57 cm wide and 76 cm high. The 57 cm internal width makes it one of the broader 45 kg trailers in this comparison.

The Bark Ranger XL weighs approximately 13.3 kg, making it considerably lighter than either of the 45 kg Croozer models. It also includes the stroller wheel and adjustable handlebar.

Its large rear tailgate has relatively low clearance, helping dogs enter without climbing through a small front opening. The floor is removable for cleaning, while exterior storage can be expanded with compatible Burley accessories.

Choose the Bark Ranger XL when internal width, lower trailer weight and regular stroller use are priorities.

Dog Bike Trailers for Dogs Above 45kg

A dog weighing more than 45 kg needs a specialist trailer. A standard 45 kg trailer should not be overloaded, even for a short journey.

The DoggyTourer range includes larger models with a published maximum permissible total weight of 80 kg. That figure includes the trailer, dog weight, bedding, accessories and any additional load.

It is therefore essential to subtract the trailer’s own weight before estimating the available capacity for the dog.

DoggyTourer Boomer: Heavy-Duty Construction and Independent Suspension

The DoggyTourer Boomer is a specialist extra-large dog bike trailer with an internal cabin measuring approximately 100 × 55 × 78 cm.

Its weather protection is rated to a 2,500 mm water column, while the three-in-one cover combines rain protection, insect mesh and ventilation options.

This is a premium trailer intended for regular use, long-distance cycling and mixed surfaces. It also suits owners who require more load headroom than a conventional 45 kg trailer provides.

DoggyTourer Beethoven 4-Wheel: Maximum Cabin Space for Very Large Dogs

The four-wheel DoggyTourer Beethoven provides the largest cabin in this guide.

Its internal dimensions are approximately 120 × 60 × 84 cm. The trailer itself weighs around 17 kg and has the same 80 kg maximum permissible total weight used by the Boomer.

Subtracting the trailer’s stated weight leaves a theoretical 63 kg before bedding, accessories or additional equipment are considered.

The key advantage is not a higher total-weight rating than the Boomer. It is the Beethoven’s longer, wider and taller cabin, combined with a four-wheel chassis and independent elastomer suspension.

This makes it particularly relevant for very large breeds and dogs with mobility limitations that need more room to enter, settle and reposition.

The Beethoven is a substantial piece of equipment. Its external dimensions are approximately 130 × 91 × 100 cm when open. Storage, doorway width, car transport and route access should all be checked in advance.

How Important Is Suspension for a Large Dog?

Suspension becomes increasingly important as the dog’s weight, journey length and surface roughness increase.

Pneumatic tyres help absorb smaller vibration, but tyres and suspension are not the same thing. A dedicated suspension system helps the trailer respond to larger bumps and repeated changes in the surface.

The Croozer Enna, Mikke and Tammo use AirPad suspension. The Hamax Pluto uses adjustable suspension with three settings. DoggyTourer uses independent wheel movement and maintenance-free elastomer suspension on the Boomer and Beethoven.

The Burley Bark Ranger uses 20-inch wheels and a low centre of gravity, but no separate suspension system. The Petrive ACTIVE ONE uses 20-inch air-filled wheels.

An dog bike trailer without suspension may be perfectly suitable for smooth roads, cycleways and gentle leisure routes. For repeated gravel, broken tarmac, forest tracks or longer touring, a suspended model will usually be the stronger choice.

Can a Large Dog Bike Trailer Carry Two Dogs?

A large or XL trailer may carry two dogs, but only when both the weight and cabin space are suitable.

The Croozer Yuuna is a particularly flexible option for two best buddies. Its included dog module, has a washable padded bed and a removable partition net that can separate one dog from another if necessary. The combined weight of both dogs, bedding and each dog must have enough space to sit and lie comfortably. Equipment must remain within the Yuuna’s 40 kg maximum load.

Temperament matters as much as size. Two dogs that relax together at home may react differently once the trailer starts moving. The Yuuna trailer is versatile and you can use it as a cargo/shopping trailer and even purchase child seats as an accessory to use it as a child bike trailer. 

Will a Large Dog Trailer Fit an E-Bike?

Many dog bike trailers can be used with e-bikes, but “e-bike compatible” does not mean the supplied hitch will fit every electric bicycle.

The correct connection depends on the rear axle and dropout arrangement. Your bicycle may use:

• A quick-release skewer
• A solid axle secured with nuts
• A modern thru-axle
• A hub motor axle with limited hitch clearance

Some bicycles accept the standard hitch supplied with the trailer. Others require a longer quick-release skewer, specialist thru-axle or solid-axle adaptor.

At the heavier end, DoggyTourer’s 80 kg figure is a total permitted weight. It is not an 80 kg passenger capacity.
