Petrive — A dog trailer with some serious thinking behind it

Pet trailers can be a bit of a minefield. Plenty look the part; fewer make us interested in what's going on underneath. That's where Petrive caught our attention. The Active One's mechanical design has been tested against requirements from EN 15918 — the European standard used for child cycle trailers. For us, that's a much more meaningful starting point than another list of pockets, windows and cup holders. Add a sturdy frame, proper wheels, braking and the practical bits needed for travelling with a dog, and it becomes a very interesting option.
  • Built around the journey — not just around how the trailer looks
  • A reassuring approach to testing — mechanical requirements based on EN 15918
  • For proper outings — a practical option for dogs up to the model's stated weight limit

Which Petrive dog bike trailer is right for me?
Petrive specialises in bike trailers and multi-purpose transport solutions for dogs and cats, with options designed for cycling, walking, jogging and travel.

Two key Petrive trailer platforms are GGBIKE, designed for dogs up to 30 kg, and the larger ActiveOne, which can accommodate dogs up to 40 kg.

GGBIKE is a compact, versatile option with a low entrance and is available in configurations that can combine bike trailer, stroller, jogger and kennel functions.

ActiveOne provides considerably more interior space, 20-inch pneumatic wheels and a maximum load of 40 kg, making it particularly suitable for larger dogs and pets that need more room.

Hitch-A-Bike supplies Petrive dog bike trailers in the UK and can help you compare the models against your dog's size and your intended use.

The Active ONE carries dogs up to 40 kg and runs on 20-inch air-filled rear wheels — the bigger diameter makes a real difference on UK road surface variation. Best for larger breeds, less mobile dogs, or riders on rougher tarmac.

The GGBike carries dogs up to 30 kg on 15.5-inch wheels and converts between bike trailer, push stroller, jogging stroller and static kennel modes. Best for owners of small-to-medium breeds who want one piece of kit that also jogs and rests.

If in doubt, browse the full Petrive range or send us your dog's weight and shoulder height — we'll match you to the right trailer.
What is the difference between Petrive GGBIKE and ActiveOne?
The main differences between Petrive GGBIKE and ActiveOne are their size, maximum load, wheel size and available configurations.

GGBIKE has a maximum load of 30 kg and uses 15.5-inch pneumatic wheels. Its compact design, low entrance and multi-purpose configurations make it particularly suitable for small and medium-sized dogs.

The larger ActiveOne increases the maximum load to 40 kg and uses large 20-inch pneumatic wheels. Its interior measures approximately 65 cm wide × 60 cm high × 80 cm long, providing substantially more room for larger dogs.

Both are designed for pet transport, fold for easier storage and can be used with compatible bicycles and e-bikes.

When choosing between them, consider your dog's weight, sitting height and body length, rather than weight alone.

Both are Polish-made, EN 15918-tested single-dog trailers. The core differences:

Active ONE — 40 kg max load. 20-inch rear wheels for smoother rolling. Interior 65 × 60 × 80 cm (roughly 250 litres). Ships with integrated rain cover, mattress, safety flag, reflectors and internal leash as standard. Optional 2-in-1 stroller kit adds a push handle and front stroller wheel.

GGBike — 30 kg max load. 15.5-inch rear wheels with 12-inch front jogging wheel. Interior 34 × 72 × 53 cm. The 4-in-1 version ships with all conversion hardware included (bike trailer + push stroller + jogging stroller + static kennel). The 2-in-1 version ships as trailer + kennel; stroller and jogger wheels are sold separately.
Can a Petrive dog bike trailer also be used as a stroller?
Yes. Selected Petrive models are designed as multi-purpose dog bike trailers and pet strollers.

For example, ActiveOne is available in a 2-in-1 configuration that combines a bike trailer with a stroller kit, including a front stroller wheel and push handle.

GGBIKE is available in different configurations, including versions that combine bike trailer, stroller, jogger and kennel functions.

This makes Petrive particularly useful for owners who want to cycle part of a journey and then continue on foot without moving their dog into another carrier.

Always check the exact configuration you're purchasing, as included stroller and jogging components vary between versions.

The Active ONE 2-in-1 ships with a front stroller wheel (6.5") and push handle in the box. Detach the tow bar, click the front wheel on, and you have a pet stroller.

The GGBike 4-in-1 goes further — same trailer-to-stroller conversion, plus a jogging mode (12-inch pneumatic front wheel with hand brake), plus a static kennel mode (wheels off, becomes a travel crate).

The GGBike 2-in-1 ships as bike trailer + kennel only — the stroller and jogging wheel kits are sold separately as an upgrade.

All conversions are tool-free via Petrive's Click & Ride (Active ONE) or Click & Fold (GGBike) systems.
Can I use a Petrive trailer for jogging with my dog?
Yes, selected Petrive GGBIKE configurations are designed for jogging as well as cycling and strolling.

The 4-in-1 GGBIKE configuration includes a larger front jogging wheel and hand brake, allowing the same pet transport system to be converted between bike trailer, stroller, jogger and kennel-style use.

This can be particularly useful for active dog owners who want one transport solution for several different activities.

Not every Petrive trailer configuration includes the jogging equipment, so check the individual product specification before purchasing if running or jogging is important to you.
Are Petrive dog bike trailers safe?
Petrive places a strong emphasis on trailer safety. Petrive states that its current ActiveOne trailer is tested against the relevant mechanical requirements of European standard EN 15918 — the standard used for child cycle trailers — and describes the GGBIKE's mechanical component as compliant with the same standard.

Petrive explains that there is no dedicated equivalent European standard specifically for pet bicycle trailers, so it applies these mechanical requirements when developing its pet trailers.

Safety equipment includes features such as an internal safety leash, reflectors, warning flag and braking system, while breathable mesh panels provide ventilation.

Petrive also states that materials used in ActiveOne comply with European REACH requirements.

Owners should still follow the manufacturer's maximum load, assembly, hitching and operating instructions and inspect the trailer before each ride.

- EN 15918 mechanical compliance — the European bike-trailer safety standard also applied to child carriers
- Internal safety leash — clips to your dog's harness D-ring (not collar) to stop lurching on descents
- Warning flag and reflective wheel elements for road visibility
- Waterproof Oxford 600D fabric with anti-slip reinforced base
- Mesh ventilation panels on both sides for airflow
- Foot brake (all models); hand brake on GGBike jogging mode

Active ONE adds an integrated rain cover, soft mattress, and REACH-compliant fabric certification as standard.

Note: this is a dog trailer, not a child trailer — there's no 5-point harness or roll cage, since it's not designed to carry humans. The EN 15918 compliance covers the frame and towing mechanism.
How do I choose the correct Petrive trailer size for my dog?
Don't choose a Petrive dog trailer based only on your dog's weight.

You should consider your dog's weight, sitting height, body length and the space required to sit, turn and lie comfortably.

GGBIKE is designed for dogs up to 30 kg, while ActiveOne increases the maximum load to 40 kg and provides a floor length of approximately 80 cm.

A tall or long dog may require the larger trailer even if its weight falls comfortably below the maximum limit of the smaller model.

For larger breeds, Hitch-A-Bike recommends checking your dog's actual measurements against the trailer's internal dimensions before ordering.

1. Shoulder height (top of shoulder to floor) — must be less than trailer internal height
2. Body length (nose to base of tail) — must fit within trailer internal length
3. Shoulder width — must fit within trailer internal width

- GGBike: W 34 cm × L 72 cm × H 53 cm
- Active ONE: W 65 cm × L 80 cm × H 60 cm

Add ~5 cm to each measurement for comfort — a dog needs room to turn around, lie down and reposition. If your dog is very broad-shouldered (Great Dane, wide-body Bulldog), the Active ONE's 65 cm internal width is still snug — measure carefully.
Is Petrive ActiveOne suitable for larger dogs?
Yes. Petrive ActiveOne is the larger-capacity option in the current Petrive bike trailer range and is designed for dogs weighing up to 40 kg.

Its internal dimensions are approximately 65 cm wide × 60 cm high × 80 cm long, with around 250 litres of interior capacity.

The trailer also features large 20-inch pneumatic wheels, a soft mattress, mesh ventilation and two large entrances.

However, the 40 kg limit doesn't automatically mean that every dog weighing less than 40 kg will fit comfortably. Large or tall breeds should also be assessed according to their body length and sitting height.

- GGBike — maximum 30 kg. Suits small-to-medium breeds (Border Collie, English Bulldog, Medium Poodle, Sheltie).
- Active ONE — maximum 40 kg. Suits larger breeds or two smaller dogs riding together.

These are weight ceilings, not target weights. A 30 kg dog in a 30 kg-rated trailer will use up all the reserve. If your dog is close to the ceiling, size up.

For dogs beyond the Petrive ActiveOne 40 kg limit, Hitch-A-Bike also supplies the specialist DoggyTourer range. DoggyTourer's largest 4-wheel Beethoven model has a permissible total weight of up to 80 kg — that figure includes the trailer itself, so the dog-only weight ceiling is lower. Check the exact DoggyTourer model's dog-weight and interior-dimension limits before ordering.
Are Petrive dog trailers suitable for senior or less-mobile dogs?
Yes. Petrive specifically positions its trailers as a transport option for older, less-mobile and joint-sensitive dogs, as well as active pets.

Features such as a low entrance can make getting in and out easier, while pneumatic wheels help absorb bumps and vibrations during travel.

ActiveOne also includes a soft mattress, while its large mesh panels provide ventilation and allow the dog to see its surroundings.

A dog bike trailer can be particularly useful when an older dog still enjoys outings but can no longer comfortably walk or run for the entire journey.

The trailer can carry the dog for part of the trip while still allowing them to walk and explore when appropriate.
Do Petrive dog bike trailers have suspension?
Petrive uses large pneumatic wheels to provide shock absorption rather than describing ActiveOne as having a separate adjustable suspension system.

ActiveOne has large 20-inch air-filled wheels, designed to absorb bumps and provide a smoother ride over uneven surfaces.

GGBIKE uses smaller 15.5-inch pneumatic wheels, also designed to improve ride comfort.

This is an important distinction when comparing Petrive with dog trailers from brands that use dedicated mechanical or adjustable suspension systems.

For most buyers, the more useful question is how effectively the trailer's wheel and chassis design suits the surfaces they expect to ride on.
Can I use a Petrive dog trailer with an e-bike?
Yes. Petrive states that its GGBIKE trailers are compatible with standard bicycles and e-bikes with 26–29-inch wheels, while ActiveOne is also designed for use with compatible bikes in the 26–29-inch wheel range.

However, wheel diameter alone does not guarantee that every bicycle or e-bike will accept the supplied hitch without modification.

Rear axle design is also important. Modern e-bikes may use thru-axles, solid axles or other configurations that can require an additional adapter or replacement axle.

If you're buying a Petrive dog bike trailer in the UK, Hitch-A-Bike can help check compatibility before ordering.
Will a Petrive dog bike trailer fit my bicycle?
Petrive's current GGBIKE and ActiveOne trailers are designed for use with many 26–29-inch bicycles and e-bikes.

The trailers include the equipment required for a standard compatible bicycle connection, including a tow bar and bike hitch.

However, bicycle rear axles vary considerably. Some bikes use a traditional quick-release axle, while others use solid axles or modern thru-axles.

If the standard Petrive hitch cannot be installed correctly on your bicycle, an appropriate adapter or replacement axle may be required.

For a compatibility check, provide Hitch-A-Bike with your bike manufacturer, model, year and rear axle specification — or clear photographs of both sides of the rear axle.

The catch: Petrive don't publish which rear-axle standards their tow bar hitch is compatible with. Quick-release axle, solid axle, thru-axle, internal-gear hub bikes — the specs don't say. On most standard rear-triangle bikes it works fine, but if your bike has:

- A thru-axle rear (common on modern e-bikes, gravel bikes, and MTBs)
- A non-standard dropout (belt-drive, internal gear, some cargo bikes)
- A very oversized rear frame
Are Petrive dog bike trailers easy to fold, transport and store?
Yes. Petrive has designed both GGBIKE and ActiveOne with compact storage and transport in mind.

GGBIKE uses Petrive's CLICK&FOLD system, while ActiveOne also folds down quickly for storage and transport.

The wheels can be removed without conventional tools using Petrive's quick-release systems. On ActiveOne, the 20-inch wheels use the Click&Ride system, and the tow bar can be stored beneath the trailer chassis.

ActiveOne folds to approximately 81.5 × 63.5 × 21.5 cm, despite offering an 80 cm-long interior floor when assembled.

With its wheels and tow bar removed, ActiveOne can also function as a pet carrier or safe kennel-style space, adding further versatility when travelling.

GGBike folded package: 54 × 80 × 30 cm. Fits across most car boots and stands upright in a hallway. Wheels click off tool-free.

Active ONE folded: 81.5 × 63.5 × 21.5 cm — significantly thinner (21.5 cm deep) so it lies flat under a bed or slides against a wall. But the 81.5 cm width means it needs a car boot wider than that, or a hatchback with folded rear seats.
